August to May
A European season runs from August to May of the following year, which is why you see it written as 2026-27. Most league matches are played at weekends, with occasional midweek rounds.
There is no offseason draft and no training camp in the American sense. The gap between May and August is short, and clubs use it for pre-season friendlies, often on tour.
Midweek is for Europe
The Champions League, Europa League and Conference League are played on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. A club in one of them plays roughly twice a week for most of the season, on top of its domestic league.
This is why squad depth matters, why managers rotate players, and why a club can be accused of prioritising one competition over another. They genuinely have to choose.
The transfer windows
Clubs can only buy and sell players during two fixed periods: a long window in the summer and a shorter one in January. Outside those windows a squad is essentially locked.
There is no trade deadline in the American sense because there are very few trades. Players are bought for money, and the fee goes to the selling club rather than being balanced against a salary cap.
